I don't think my hardware is faulty, because the same problems occur also on 
Windows XP when using the wrong (generic) SIS drivers while the driver supplied 
by ASRock work fine. See my initial report for details. But maybe this driver 
has a workaround for a design fault in this mainboard.

I have created and attached the log described in the article. But I cannot see 
how this relates to not using PulseAudio. Are you sure you posted the correct 
link?

Using the latest drivers from ppa did not change the behavior, master control 
still not working, crackling on lowest PCM volume still present.
