Mark: You're ethernet controller is a realtek, so that's probably
unrelated.

When you install the 3.0 kernel the kernel you are using now will stay
installed. By default the most recent kernel will be booted (i.e. 3.0
after you've installed it), but you can select your kernel by pressing
and holding the left Shift button right after your BIOS screen
disappears during boot. You'll see a text-based menu. Select "Previous
kernel versions" from the menu and you'll be presented with a list of
all the older kernel version you have installed, from which you can
select the kernel you'd like to boot. After you've booted to your
current kernel you can just remove the 3.0 packages if you wish.
