It sounds like this diagonal lines issue was experienced by at least one other 
person with this printer.

but were probably using the foomatic driver, as that is the one that was, for 
me, chosen by default by Ubuntu.

I ended up installing the Samsung proprietary driver, which works ok so
far. Images were printed without ugly lines. What little text I printed
looked bad though. I can't say whether any driver is better at various
tasks than the others without doing more printing. (A warning: The
Samsung installation program silently messed with some permissions in my
firefox profile folder.)
