Public bug reported:

New information: After another Ubuntu update, the modem started working
again, but after another kernel update, it started segfaulting again.
Now it works intermittently. It takes several attempts (including
shutting down the laptop by holding down the power button when it
segfaults) until it works. After contacting Nokia support, the
workaround that works 1 in 4 times is to start the Windows modem
software through Wine, plug in the stick, and wait for the Ubuntu
software to load. Most of the time it still segfaults, but 1 out of 4
times it works.

Once again, the triggering event seems to have been the kernel update.
No info was available using Ubuntu-bug because it's not an official
Ubuntu package.

Original question below:

Did the latest kernel update break compatibility with Nokia's CS-18
modem?

I've got a CS-18 cellular modem (through Rogers Canada) that was working
fine until today. I plugged it in, and the system froze completely,
requiring me to hold down the power button to turn it off. The modem
worked for a good two months, and the only thing that changed between
Saturday (last use) and today was a bunch of updates that included a
kernel update.

A complete freeze like that suggests a kernel problem to me.
Unfortunately, Rogers doesn't support Linux, and I haven't managed to
contact Nokia yet. (The modem includes an Ubuntu software package, so
Nokia does support the system.)

My computer is an older Lenovo ThinkPad, Celeron, 512 MB RAM, running
Ubuntu 10.04, fully up to date as of this morning. The modem still
works fine on my wife's HP laptop running Windows 7.
