Public bug reported:
This bug appears similar to Bug #546587, but has arisen suddenly under
11.04 natty.
I do a full-upgrade on this system several times a week, but am not
aware of any (or which?) upgrade triggered this sudden failure.
The primary symptom is a lack of keyboard function on gdm.
Troubleshooting to date has involved:
1. eliminating hardware failure as a cause;
2. rebooting into recovery console to confirm full keyboard function in login
console;
3. replacement of gdm by kdm has worked around the problem and restored
capacity to use X.org (yes, I know there are other means, such as startx, but
other users of this computer are less Linux-literate than I. I want to keep
everything simple for them.)
A quick Google search suggests that this problem, which periodically
afflicts users, stems from an initialization timing problem. Other life
events hinder me from taking the time to develop the skills to maintain
an appropriate patch on a permanent basis.
P.S. This bug *_might_* be a duplicate of Bug #807251.
