Moving to hplip, in oneiric there are still two hplip entries that
provide identical "HP LaserJet 4000 Series Postscript (recommended)"
PPDs:

$ lpinfo -m | grep -i "Laserjet_4000"
foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/HP-LaserJet_4000-lj5gray.ppd HP LaserJet 4000
Foomatic/lj5gray
foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/HP-LaserJet_4000-Postscript.ppd HP LaserJet 4000
Foomatic/Postscript
foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/HP-LaserJet_4000-pxlmono.ppd HP LaserJet 4000
Foomatic/pxlmono
drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-laserjet_4000_series-hpijs-pcl3.ppd HP LaserJet 4000 Series
hpijs pcl3, 3.11.7
drv:///hpcups.drv/hp-laserjet_4000_series-pcl3.ppd HP LaserJet 4000 Series
pcl3, hpcups 3.11.7
hplip:0/HP/hp-laserjet_4000_series-ps.ppd HP LaserJet 4000 Series Postscript
(recommended)
hplip:1/HP/hp-laserjet_4000_series-ps.ppd HP LaserJet 4000 Series Postscript
(recommended)

$ /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-driverd cat
hplip:0/HP/hp-laserjet_4000_series-ps.ppd > 0.txt
$ /usr/lib/cups/daemon/cups-driverd cat
hplip:1/HP/hp-laserjet_4000_series-ps.ppd > 1.txt
$ diff -us 0.txt 1.txt
Files 0.txt and 1.txt are identical

Running lpinfo -m shows this is the case for other PostScript printers
too.

** Package changed: cups (Ubuntu) => hplip (Ubuntu)
