Robert, it is great to hear the news, thanks for the findings.
If you are interested in looking for the root cause, you may
try to use 'git bisect' to find which commit make both your HDD
and DVD workable. Even you can find which commit does make
DVD not workable in natty tree.

BTW: unfortunately, I have no the machine and can't do the bisect by
