I've been compiling my own kernels as a workaround, and haven't been
encountering this problem at all (even when using ubuntu's config),
indicating that it is an issue with some patch being applied by ubuntu.
(I've encountered plenty of other problems, but those are all, of
course, my own fault :P )

If somebody could point me towards what kernel patches are being used
(or if ubuntu maintains a separate tree from which kernel binary
packages are built, where that tree is), I'd be happy to play around and
see what I can find.
