Just to clarify, the terminal login asks for the username, which is
prints on screen. When it asks you for the password, it will not print
characters or asterisk symbols on the screen. Just type the password and
press enter. If this does not bring you to a prompt (user@host), then
you may have an issue.

  When I use the Terminal and it asks for my user name, then my
  Password, I cannot type in my password. Then I have to end the
