Please attach here the output of the /var/log/syslog showing one such
connection.
There is a good chance this is being caused by PPP defaulting to require
echo responses from the provider (Verizon, for example, does not answer
echo requests); when PPP is configured as such, and the link provider
does not answer, then PPP drops the connection.
