Thanks for your response! Yeah that's with compiz and Ubuntu Classic, with the unity plugin disabled. The issue goes away if I switch to metacity or mutter, so that seems to point at compiz.
The behavior is identical to that described for this bug -- the maximized window is visually displaced downwards, but it reacts to the mouse as if it weren't displaced. What do you think: new bug? same old bug?
