Solution found!

The computer was unable to switch to text mode. That's why it could not
show anything during boot (no logo, no text) and that's why it was
unable to change terminal.

The problem was in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file: you should delete

quiet splash video=uvesafb nomodeset: mode_option=1920x1200 -24, mtrr=3
scroll=ywrap vt.handoff=7

so that the line will be:

linux   /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-generic
root=UUID=9deb4b2d-8924-4975-abd7-950b7dcc9230 ro single  splash vga=791

It works fine now!
