Gerard,

This is extremely interesting that it works sometimes, and doesn't work
other times. At first, this sounds exactly like bug 3731, however no
one has ever reported this working intermittently as you have. It's
very clear looking at your xorg.conf file that sometimes it detects the
monitor as L70S, and other times detects it as "Generic Monitor".

Would you mind doing some tests? Could you boot the live CD a bunch of
times and for each boot, take some measurements:

For each LiveCD boot trial:
   * Does /etc/X11/xorg.conf show L705 or Generic Monitor?
   * Was xresprobe installed? (run command `which xresprobe`)
   * Did you do any unusual actions during boot (press some keys, choose
different boot options, etc.)
   * Anything else unique about this boot?

This information could prove to be extremely handy at getting insights
into this problem that many, many people are running into, so your help
would be very much appreciated!
