Marking this as invalid. After a lot more testing, and trying different
kernels (tried Oneiric and multiple Natty kernels with the same results)
I replaced the minipci wi-fi card in the laptop with one from a dead
Lenovo. Wireless now works just fine without issues, so it seems that
the problem was just bad hardware.
