I have found an interesting work around to this issue. At the root of
the problem is a miscommunication between OpenOffice/LibreOffice via
PostScript. Therefore if you make OpenOffice/LibreOffice communicate
using PDF this issue disappears.

In LibreOffice 3.4.2:
File>Printer Settings>Properties
Select the Device tab
Change Printer Language type to PDF via the drop down menu
Problem Solved!

I don't know a lot about printing but I could see where this may not
work on older printers that do not support the PDF format natively. I
would guess that when you print a PDF file normally it is converted to
PostScript then sent to the printer.
