@Matthias Klose: Well, I actually had a quick look at doing so yesterday, because Luke advised me to do so.
They're not drop-in replacements for each other, so the code that accesses this stuff has to be rewritten. That is yet not that many C functions I would have to rewrite - I could probably get it right in a day or max two - but having talked to upstream I know there are plans to use json-c in more places than they do now.
