Indeed, getting Azureus from SourceForge often seems to resolve problems. However, there is also confusion amongst different bugs, which I have being trying to clean up. "It doesn't start" is not particularly helpful and confuses separate causes. It is unclear whether the SourceForge version works because Ubuntu patches are causing problems or whether it is choice of compiler or both. It sounds like Gary Coady (on 2006-10-09) is closest to locating the cause here with his fourth point: lack of GTK initialisation. I'm not sure why this problem doesn't affect everyone - maybe also choice of JRE is an issue.
