Bob, Just because the required package is named 'libgoffice-0.8-8', it doesn't mean that it is required in version 0.8.8. What gnucash calls for, is only the package name. Any version equal to or above 0.8.8 is accepted by the package dependencies.
However, your problem seems to be completely unrelated to package dependencies -- even completely unrelated to libgoffice-0.8-8 or gnucash. The submitted DpkgTerminalLog.txt contains the following lines: Unpacking libgoffice-0.8-8 (from .../libgoffice-0.8-8_0.8.12-1_amd64.deb) ... dpkg-deb (subprocess): data: internal gzip read error: '<fd:0>: data error' dpkg-deb: error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2 ... which looks like the package file libgoffice-0.8-8_0.8.12-1_amd64.deb it tries to unpack contains an error. A possible reason for that is an incomplete or corrupted download. You should investigate why that happened. Please check whether your system is short on disk storage on any partition. If not, please re-download the package libgoffice-0.8-8 from [1]Ubuntu and install it manually by running following command on a shell in the download directory: sudo dpkg -i libgoffice-0.8-8_0.8.12-1_amd64.deb You can select a download location from any of the mirrors on this page: http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/amd64/libgoffice-0.8-8/download If this succeeded (and your system isn't hosed by other means), you should be able to install gnucash as usual.
