This will often happen on my Intell Atom N450/Acew Aspire 1 netbook. In that case the cause is Plymouth trying to start before KMS is initialized, causing the console to show if the text theme is removed. The workaround on this machine is to insert the code "sleep 2" in the script just before calling plymouthd in /usr/share/initramfs- tools/scripts/init-top/plymouth
