Ok, it turns out removing that file isn't the cause of my logins working: I removed it yesterday while I was logged in and shutdown my computer. Today I switched my computer on and the login screen, again, wouldn't let me in. I jumped into terminal to remove the .dmrc file, only to discover that it wasn't there. I went back to the login screen and this time it let me straight in.
So it looks like simply logging into the terminal allows the login screen to work...
