Just have added the kernel from maverick-backports and can confirm that:

-- menu.lst *is* regenerated, but ignores my settings in /etc/default/grub ;
-- grub.cfg is *not* regenerated at all, had to use 'sudo grub-mkconfig -o
grub.cfg', that did the trick ;

As effectively menu.lst is ignored, I see no point in editing it manually, and
the up-to-date workaround is just to run
'sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' every time after kernel update ;
are there any standard ways to do so within Ubuntu framework ?
