This is almost certainly due to the AppArmor policy for the thumbnailer and is
by design. If your home directory is outside of /home, then you will probably
want to adjust /etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home or
/etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/<some file you create>. Otherwise, you can
update /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.evince to contain something like:
owner /var/andrew/*.png rw,
However you adjust your profile, you will want to reload the AppArmor profile
by performing:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince
Since this bug is site-specific and the problem can be adjusted via
configuration files, I am going to mark this as "Won't Fix". Please feel
free to report any other bugs you may find. Thanks!
