To switch drivers I had to: sudo apt-get install hpijs-ppds Power menu -> System Settings -> "Printing" Right-click your printer > Properties > Make and Model > Change ... "Provide PPD File" Browse to /usr/share/ppd/hplip/HP/ Select my printer
"Normal Grayscale" then worked.
