the thing about the GPTimer is interesting... i believe the kernel has CONFIG_NOHZ defined, that might be interesting to try without that (e.g. with HZ). in fact it would be nice to make a custom kernel that uses GPTimer instead of local timer, but that might be a little more tricky (even though we had that for very early OMAP chips since local timer weren't functional).
