The workaround discussed in the thread I linked to was related to a timing issue, and it's entirely possible that something has changed between kernel versions that has made the timing scenario much easier to trigger. Fundamentally though this probably is a hardware problem, but potentially one with a workaround that should be implemented in the bios.
