I notice that this happens both when booting an ordinary Natty system
(which uses the GRUB boot loader) and when booting a live CD (which uses
syslinux).  To me this implies that it's very unlikely to be a boot
loader bug, and I'm going to go ahead and mark that task Invalid.  The
kernel task remains open.
