Colin -- Sorry, but they don't exist any more.
The affected system would not boot, and I re-installed Ubuntu to resolve the problem. To prevent the problem from occurring again, I switched that system from using UEFI back to a BIOS. Sorry. - Bill PS: Ok, I'd consider switching that system back to UEFI and going through the whole scenario again, but I would need a procedure to recover the logs off of an unbootable system. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- --- On Mon, 8/15/11, Colin Watson <[email protected]> wrote: From: Colin Watson <[email protected]> Subject: [Bug 817157] Re: Thinkpad X120e (UEFI, AMD64) Won't Boot After Update To: [email protected] Date: Monday, August 15, 2011, 5:38 PM Could you attach /var/log/dpkg.log and /var/log/apt/term.log so that perhaps I can see what versions were involved in the upgrade? -- You received this bug notification because you are subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/817157 Title: Thinkpad X120e (UEFI, AMD64) Won't Boot After Update Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: System asked to apply 'partial updates' updates to X120e today, which included some Grub2 items. After updates were installed, I rebooted system as requested and was asked which devices the boot loader should be installed on. Following advice in the help, I selected all devices. However, system failed to reboot. Got black text screen with the following on it: error: invalid arch independent ELF magic. grub rescue> _ This is the third time this has happened to me. First time was a month or so ago. My X120e with 11.04 on it asked to apply updates. System would not boot after updates were applied. Re-installed 11.04 that evening, including reformatting the disk. System had same problem, and would would not boot because of the 'ELF magic' error. Re-installed 11.04 yet again. This time, when asked to apply the partial updates (no, I don't know why it asked for a partial update), I looked at the packages that I was being asked to have installed. De- selected Grub2 updates (no, I did not note which ones it was asking for). Updates applied, system reboots normally and operates without a problem for about a month. Two days ago, I was asked to apply partial updates again. Today, I decided to let Update apply everything it wanted again, but 'ELF magic' issue occurred again. The X120e is configured to boot with UEFI. My home directory was encrypted - an install option. AMD64 install.
