LVDS1 reactivates when VGA1 is being dimmed just prior to being powered off as a result of the inactivity timer. At the same time, the gnome panels are moved from VGA1 to LVDS1. "Unminimized" application windows remain on VGA1. The workaround described in Comment #3 restores things to how they were and how they are supposed to be.
