I am not see issues with my proprietary drivers. When drivers fail,
unity-2d is started for me.

Unity does start if I add a windowed application like gnome-terminal to my
startup apps. Unity starts promptly. If I close the app, unity shuts down. This
trick does not work with something like Tomboy because it does not create a
window when it is started with the session. If I use alt-f2 to start unity from
the session command line (with a visible app window), unity properly restarts
and I can close the app. I can also start unity by starting gnome-terminal from
another console:
    ctrl-alt-F1
    DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-terminal
    ctrl-alt-F7
    unity

I think the issue here is the gnome-session manager. It is not starting
unity at the right time, or unity is not in the proper session to start.
I believe I saw in some tracebacks that unity-panel-services were not
running. I do not believe that since I saw gwibber messages when I
logged in to the unity-less session.
