Restored access to XP by installing ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) desktop amd64 and
verified hash of ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso using HashTab windows
utility (see attached screenshot). Matches
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes#11.04

LTS install was done by specifying ubuntu partitions (/, swap, and
/home) manually. Partitions were formatted. No errors until after the CD
tray opened, at which point it hung displaying some I/O error, but the
reset button "cured" that.

Suggested path to 11.04?
