The problem persists after dist-upgrade to Dapper
Furthermore the volume control problem is an issue only with gnome.
Meaning with mplayer, vlc etc I can control the volume of a mp3 or
movie I am playing.

But the system sounds on the desktop are at full blown (so currently
dissabled all desktop sounds as they scare the shit out of me with
full volume and no means to adjust this)
