That was two months ago... I don't remember the reason in detail :) I think that without it, the upstream-provided configure script (or some other part of the build process) did not work correctly for me in whatever Lubuntu 11.10 Alpha I had at that time, and it looked like the build files had been generated using an earlier autotools version than 11.10 had. So, I guessed that recreating them from the configure.ac/Makefile.am should help, and it did.
