The problem is that the GLib annotations in gobject-introspection were crippled with this upload: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gobject-introspection/1.29.0-0ubuntu2 Undoing that patch fixes gnome-shell. Supposedly that would also break python-gobject, but that would be fixed by upgrading python-gobject to 2.90.1 which has the invoke-rewrite branch merged.
