I have the same problem and can confirm this for an IBM Thinkpad R40 (Type 2723). After hibernate no sound and no "thinkpad buttons", ACPI-Button events (?).
But "Suspend to RAM" does not work. Sometimes the computer goes into suspend mode but after wake up the screen stays black. One time it woke up but it didn't accept my password and the console log complained about "dead device" /dev/sda.
