Try this:
*{NOTE: make sure the file exists '/var/lib/dpkg/status-old' before
continuing}*
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/status
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
sudo mkdir /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install -f
Then try update-manager again.
