** Description changed: after today updates I'm only able to use xserver in fail safe mode. I think the xserver-common and xserver-core updates caused the problem. I'm using ATI proprietary drivers . using synaptic to force the version of xserver-common and sxerver-core improves the X failsafe resolution but the normal boot halts just before X login same as before. - Re iunstalling the graphic card driver solved the probelm + Re installing the graphic driver solved the probelm.
