Same problem here, but I think I have found the culprit :
module snd-hda-codec-intelhdmi.ko is missing in /lib/modules/2.6.38-11
-generic-pae/kernel/sound/pci/hda/
(as well as snd-hda-codec-nvhdmi.ko and snd-hda-codec-atihdmi.ko by the
way...).
They are in place with 2.6.35-28-generic-pae.
