Am now marking invalid, as of yesterday don't need to set the nomodeset option. 
Do however need to always hit the spacebar, then proceed from there
If not then the boot always hangs right after checking battery ..
So I can't say with 100% certainty that setting nomodeset was actually  needed, 
it may have just been that  hitting the spacebar was what actually  resolved  
the boot up issue
