Hmm... I think i've fixed (at least for now). I un-installed linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38 (2.6.38-.201108271604), rebooted, the same problem was there
I then re-installed linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.38 (2.6.38-.201108271604). and rebooted again At this time it was weird.... I think i left the headset plugged in at boot, and when the system came back up, the speakers were just all completely mute and unplugging the headset didn't un-mute them. I rebooted the system without headset plugged in, and now it's back to working properly (all speakers mute when headset plugged in, and un-mute when unplugged) I'm going to do some more experimentation to confirm that is indeed what is happening (speakers permanently muted if the headset is plugged in at boot).
