Is this still valid? Are there any packages that depends on "libusb"? I
think they have all been fixed to depend on libusb-0.1-4.
Also, libusb-1.0 is not compatible with the 0.x versions so it can not
provide their functionality. There is an upstream libusb-compat wrapper
around 1.0 which gives 0.x compatibility but it is not included in
Debian or Ubuntu (yet).
