It turned out that the disk was fine (I booted the computer with it in the CD-ROM drive and did an integrity check). When I first got the error, I found the file with problems, opened it with file-roller and extracted its contents, and I had no problem with that. I ended up installing Feisty over Edgy, instead of upgrading.
