This appears to have been caused by having opera installed (which never
did work). After removing opera and then openoffice ia32 libs I managed
to get an install.

Perhaps not related: I then had to change the driver in xorg.conf from
nvidia to nv, in order for X to start. Still it doesn't get the
resolution correct (uses 1280x1024, but only 1600x1200 is configured).
Also twice Xorg has run at 99% CPU and completely unresponsive from
local machine (including ctrl-alt-backspace and ctrl-alt-f1), requiring
a sudo kill -9 from an ssh connection.
