Please also check your compiz refresh rate setting:
  System Settings... >
  CompizConfig Settings Manager >
  Composite >
  Refresh Rate

It should be the same as your monitor's vertical refresh rate. If the
refresh rate is too high then of course it will consume more CPU than
normal.

Ideally Detect Refresh Rate should be ticked ON and you should have the
workaround described in bug 92599 configured. In my experience that has
solved all framerate issues with Nvidia chips.
