Update on my problems; on further inspection the driver is probably not the reason why the speakers do not work. I rebooted into Windows, and I had the same problem there. Further inspection indicates a small crack in the ring on the minijack connector, and a wild guess is that one of my kids have had an incident with my laptop which has caused some damage either to the "minijack detector" or some hardware issue where the speakers no longer work. My apologies for the misleading bug report.
