I've been looking whenever I can for solutions/work-arounds and I found that someone else with a similar problem created a "Core 2 Duo Support" page in the Ubuntu Wiki (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Core_2_Duo_Support). I don't know if this can help everyone here but, for anyone here who doesn't see their CD drive in /dev/, there is a solution that I haven't tested yet. It appears to be a problem with PATA support, so your two options are to either get a SATA CD drive or get an adapter to connect your PATA drive to the SATA connector. When my new drive arrives, I will get back to you with the results.
