My comment was about the popup suggestion, and I do think its a good one.
If you want a daemon to free memory (eg. kill processes) like
http://www.cloudlinux.com/docs/memmonitor.php I would advise against since
some programs like pdf/ocr related ones often use large quantities of memory
to process a document causing general slowness.
