Since you mentioned the installer hangs, I'm not sure what the procedure is.. but you can try this:
Add some persistent space when using usb-creator-gtk if you haven't done so already (so you can make a hard restart and have the logs saved). Use sudo ubiquity --debug to start the installer (Note that passwords will be logged in debugging mode).
