Public bug reported:

When using a stacked monitor configuration (laptop on the bottom,
external monitor located above), compiz/Unity will sometimes place
gnome-terminal above the top of the first monitor. The window is
resized to about 80x3 (characters), and the menu bar is hidden behind
the fixed panel that holds the indicator-* applets. Moving the window
around doesn't always fix the problem, because as soon as I go to the
Terminal menu to resize the window to 80x24, it returns to its original
position. The easiest fix is to move the gnome-terminal window to the
top monitor, and far enough that the 80x24 window won't span the
monitors. Then, have the terminal resize itself to the appropriate
size.

I'll follow up with more specific instructions and some
screenshots/photos of my monitor setup. This bug turned out to be
trickier to reproduce on-command than I expected. After a fresh boot,
the terminal windows were consistently placed on the lower monitor. It
may be that this only occurs after I've disconnected/reconnected the
external monitor a few times.

This is a relatively low priority with respect to my ability to use the
system, but since Unity is so smooth and consistent in so many respects,
having a 5-second fight with the window manager a few times a day stands
out. :-)
