The actual error, comprehensively hidden by guile to the point where I
had to single-step through dlopen in order to find it, is:

  /tmp/buildd/guile-gnome-platform-2.16.1/corba/gnome/corba/.libs
/libguile-gnome-corba-2.so.0: undefined symbol: TC_ORBit_ITypes_struct

This symbol is in /usr/lib/libORBit-2.so. libguile-gnome-corba-2 has:

  NEEDED libguile-gnome-gobject-2.so.0
  NEEDED libguile.so.17
  NEEDED libpthread.so.0
  NEEDED libc.so.6

TC_ORBit_ITypes is used directly by libguile-gnome-corba, so it should
link against it directly too. I'll fix this and forward upstream.
