Original bug was filed against Ubuntu 8.10, but is still present in Natty. Original Bug: bug #368679. Description: On computers with some rtl818x chip based wifi cards, when module rtl8180 is modprobed this causes a complete freeze of the system. This issue is severe for two reasons: * computers with such wifi cards aren't able to connect to their network via wifi through a native linux driver; * because rtl8180 is modprobed at startup, when a new user tries Ubuntu on such computer, the liveCD will show a black screen without any error message, and then the user will blame Ubuntu. Affected Ubuntu releases: Intrepid, Jaunty, Karmic, Natty Affected wifi cards (examples): * MSI PC54G3 III (chipset RTL8185L) * Zyxel G-302 V3 Workarounds: * ndiswrapper: * works on Intrepid and Natty but not on Jaunty * manual install of Realtek's supported driver: * status unknown + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23. + AplayDevices: + **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** + card 1: default [USB Audio CODEC ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] + Subdevices: 0/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: + **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** + card 1: default [USB Audio CODEC ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] + Subdevices: 1/1 + Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC1: ruediger 1531 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/pcmC1D0p: ruediger 1531 F...m pulseaudio + CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + Card1.Amixer.info: + Card hw:1 'default'/'Burr-Brown from TI USB Audio CODEC at usb-0000:00:1d.1-1, full s' + Mixer name : 'USB Mixer' + Components : 'USB08bb:2902' + Controls : 2 + Simple ctrls : 1 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=d1a3595d-1554-4fe1-a3bb-5bda0053418d + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release i386 (20101007) + MachineType: exone D1562 + Package: linux (not installed) + PciMultimedia: + + ProcEnviron: + LANGUAGE=en_US:en + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.38-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/lvmvg-Root ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-11.48-generic 2.6.38.8 + RelatedPackageVersions: + linux-restricted-modules-2.6.38-11-generic N/A + linux-backports-modules-2.6.38-11-generic N/A + linux-firmware 1.52 + RfKill: + + Tags: natty + Uname: Linux 2.6.38-11-generic i686 + UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to natty on 2011-04-30 (124 days ago) + UserGroups: adm admin audio cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 09/24/2003 + dmi.bios.vendor: FUJITSU SIEMENS // Phoenix Technologies Ltd. + dmi.bios.version: 4.06 Rev. 1.06.1562 + dmi.board.name: D1562 + dmi.board.vendor: FUJITSU SIEMENS + dmi.board.version: S26361-D1562 + dmi.chassis.type: 6 + dmi.chassis.vendor: exone + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnFUJITSUSIEMENS//PhoenixTechnologiesLtd.:bvr4.06Rev.1.06.1562:bd09/24/2003:svnexone:pnD1562:pvr:rvnFUJITSUSIEMENS:rnD1562:rvrS26361-D1562:cvnexone:ct6:cvr: + dmi.product.name: D1562 + dmi.sys.vendor: exone ** Attachment added: "AcpiTables.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/839019/+attachment/2340705/+files/AcpiTables.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/839019 Title: wifi module rtl8180 freezes the system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/839019/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
